   This has been answered before on HOCKEY-L, but here goes again ...
 
   NCAA rules make exception for student athletes participating on
   Olympic (and National) teams.  The players are eligible for
   same-season participation, even if they aren't registered or taking
   any classes.
 
   You didn't ask, but the Tardif (and 4 other grad students in 4 other
   sports at Maine) problem comes from a different rule.  (Tardif has
   already graduated and is in a Master's Degree accounting program).
 
   The NCAA requires graduate student athletes to take 8 credit hours.
   The common standard on this campus seems to be 6 hours, though it
   varies from department to department (the Maine CS department has a
   MAXIMUM of 6 credit hours!).  Carville mistakenly quoted the campus
   standard to those 5 (unfortunate) students.
