Regarding early season polls (and not from an expert). It looks to me as
if the pollsters are about right concerning Bowling Green. This is, I
think expected to be either another rebuilding year, or the year in which
BGSU has turned the corner after several mediocre (at least from the
standpoint of W-L records) seasons.
As mentioned earlier on hockey-l, BG dropped in the CCHA polls when
Aaron Ellis (G) left for the Jr. Red Wings (or whatever team) and the
projected defense was quite questionable. Bob Petrie, a freshman, has
provided steady goalkeeping thusfar, but certainly the pollsters will need a
bit more experience in the CCHA on Petrie's account before they can depend on
him to remain a factor in BGSU's continued success. Other factors include the
LARGE contributions the other BGSU freshmen will need to keep up in order to
maintain the consistency needed to succeed (again, W-L record) in a very close,
very competitive league.
It is, however, a joy to see these guys play as a team. And in truth,
that's much more important to me than the polls. If a team can be placed
in the top 10 in most of the polls, and remain there for the greater
part of the season, it's a heck of a college hockey team IMHO.
