I waited to post till Monday, hoping to "cool" off somewhat after Huskies
were "Yackeled" Friday night, Obviously it hasn't worked!
Friday night the Huskies battled back from scores of 3-1 and 4-2 to tie
the game and send it to overtime. 2 and 1/2 minutes into the overtime
MTU's John Young was circling behind his own net, when a Duluth player
cut his skates out from under him in clear view of Yackle, John went head
first into the boards, and for good measure the Duluth player hit him in the
face with the stick, the puck caromed off the back boards and out front
where duluth got 2 shots, the second going into the net. We all knew the
game wasn't over, cause Duluth was getting a penalty and the goal wouldn't
count. NOT. Yackle signaled the Goal and the Game was over. This was the
worst no call I've ever seen in college hockey. This brings me back to my
biggest complaint in watching hockey, If it's against the rules in the
first period of the game, then its against the rules in the OT!
It wasn't a pretty scene as cans came flying on the ice in the direction
of Yackle at the scorers bench (these people should be banned from viewing
hockey by the way), and people who normally sit quietly thru games were
lined up at the tunnel the refs pass thru to leave the ice, letting them
know how they thought of the Job they did. I have never left a hockey game
so upset in my life, both at the way we lost and at the clowns that threw
the cans on the ice.
Saturday night Brought us more Yackle antics. In the first period, Coach
Bob Mancini wanted to question Yackle about a faceoff and Yackle refused
to acknowledge Mancini, When he finally did, It was to give Bob a Bench
minor, If Yackle does his job this never happens. Oh well back to the Game
once again tech Battled back and had a 5-4 lead in the 3rd on a Goal By
Liam Garvey, But UMD's Hobey Candidate Derick Plante tied the score
at 5 all with about 5 min remaining. Plante is one of the most talented
skaters I've seen in a long time. He made some moves and shots this
weekend, that should have been impossible. As the period wore down, the
last 3 minutes were all Tech as they swarmed the duluth net, trying to get
the Game winner. Again Yackle shined as a duluth player, on his knees with
no one near him reached out, grabbed the puck and covered it on the ice
Yackle blows the whistle on what could only be delay of game, 3000 fans once
again anticipate the chance to win the game on the penality, but low and
behold, signals for a faceoff. The Game ended in a 5-5 OT tie.
The Huskies played well enough to win both games, but came up with 1 point
on the weekend.
On a better note, Sophmore defensman Liam Garvey and Freshman Center Pat
Mikesch have been chosen to play for team USA in the 1992 World Junior
championships dec 26-jan4 in in Gavle, Sweeden. Team USA will prepare
for the tournament with a training camp dec 14-17th in Lake Placid, then
will play in a nation tournament in Norway dec 19-23 against Switzerland
Germany and Norway.
Congrats to Pat and Liam, we'll miss them here for the denver series,
but its a chance of a lifetime for them.
