HOCKEY WINS AT SALVE REGINA, 8-2

PORTSMOUTH, RI- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three goals within a minute and 15 seconds in the first period, took a 3-0 lead and went on to defeat host Salve Regina, 8-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink Wednesday evening.

Sophomore forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored three of the Corsairs’ first four goals, and finished with three goals and one assist. Hill scored a power play goal at 7:13 of the first period, scored again 17 seconds later after the Corsairs won the ensuing face-off, and scored 17 seconds into the second period to make it 4-1. Freshman forward Shawn Manning (Stoughton, MA/Salisbury School) scored at 8:28 of the first period to give the Corsairs a 3-0 lead. Sophomore forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) and sophomore forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) each earned two assists in the first period.

Hill’s third goal was the only goal of the second period, and sophomore forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored twice for UMass Dartmouth and freshman forward Paul Graham (Quincy, MA/Northern Cyclones) and junior forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) each scored once for the Corsairs in the third period. Joe Colaianni scored for the Seahawks in the first period, and Andre DeSimone scored in the third.

“We finally had a breakout offensive game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was good to see us put the puck in the net. We’ll get to come home and get ready for Senior Day Saturday against Franklin Pierce.”

The Corsairs out shot the Seahawks, 45-31. UMD junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) made 29 saves, while Pat Enloe made 37 for SRU. UMass Dartmouth converted one of four power play chances, while killing five of six SRU opportunities.

The Corsairs are now 13-5-2 and 10-1-1 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Seahawks are now 2-15-2 and 2-11-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Franklin Pierce in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game on Saturday. It will be Senior Day, and the Corsairs’ graduating seniors will be honored.
