HOCKEY TIES FITCHBURG STATE, 2-2

FITCHBURG, MA-Freshman forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/NJ Rockets) scored twice as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team and host Fitchburg State played a 2-2 tie in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Wallace Civic Center Saturday evening.

Capodanno’s converted a pass from junior defenseman Chris Carpenter (Westford, MA/Berkshire School) at the 1:07 mark of the first period to give UMass Dartmouth the early lead. Kris Threlkeld of the Falcons tied it 2:13 into the second period, and Bryan Canter’s unassisted goal at 6:55 gave FSC a 2-1 lead. Junior forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) assisted on Capodanno’s second goal of the game, which tied the score at 11:38 of the second period. The third period and overtime were scoreless.

“It was a back and forth, up and down game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They seemed to play with a little more desperation, since they were at home, and they’re battling for a playoff spot. We’ve played a lot of road games, and we’re weary of the road.”

The Falcons out shot the Corsairs, 51-32. UMD junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) made 49 saves, while Robert Vorse made 30 for Fitchburg. UMass Dartmouth didn’t convert any of their three power play chances, and killed all four FSC power play opportunities.

The Corsairs are now 12-5-2 and 9-1-1 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Falcons are now 7-7-5 and 4-4-3. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salve Regina in an Eastern College Athletic Conference game next Wednesday evening.
