HOCKEY EDGES SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 2-1

HOOKSETT, NH-Junior forward Aaron Blades (Chino, CA/Cushing Academy) scored the tie-breaking goal with 27 seconds remaining in the second period and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team held off host Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Ice Den on Saturday.

Blades took a pass from sophomore forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH./Valley Junior Warriors) in the left face-off circle and fired a shot past Penmen goalkeeper Todd Rowley to put the Corsairs ahead for good. Sophomore forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors), who carried the puck into the SNHU zone, drew the other assist.

Sophomore defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead at 12:43 of the first period when he scored on a 50 foot slap shot in the first period, Stahl and Hill assisted. Southern New Hampshire tied the score on a power play goal 3:33 into the second period when John Frey took a pass from Frank O’Connor and scored on a back door play.

There was no scoring in the third period. Junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) stopped all eight shots he faced in the third period to help preserve the victory.

“It was a difficult game, and I was happy with the way we played, especially in the third period protecting the lead,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They pulled their goalie at the end of the game, and they didn’t get a shot on our net. Everyone is still bunched up at the top of our league, and it will be very competitive for the top spots.”

The Corsairs out shot the Penmen, 29-28. Dryjowicz-Burek and Rowley each made 27 saves. UMass Dartmouth didn’t convert any of their seven power play chances, while killing three of four SNHU opportunities.

The Corsairs improved to 11-5-1 and 8-1-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while the Penmen dropped to 5-8-0 and 5-6-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Suffolk in an Eastern College Athletic Conference game next Wednesday evening.
