HOCKEY DOWNS ASSUMPTION, 5-2

NEW BEDFORD, MA-Sophomore forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team defeated visiting Assumption, 5-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday.

Manning’s goal broke a 2-2 tie at 10:18 of the second period. He took a pass from his brother, freshman forward Shawn Manning (Stoughton, MA/Salisbury School) and backhanded a shot past Assumption freshman goalie Steve DiDomenico (Lowell, MA/Tilton School). Junior forward Aaron Blades (Chino, CA/Cushing Academy) drew the other assist in his first game at UMD.

Freshman forward Pat O’Kane (Hollis, NH/Williston-Northampton HS) had tied the score for the Greyhounds 24 seconds before Manning scored. O’Kane took a cross-crease pass from freshman forward Taylor Larsen (Blackston, MA/Blackstone-Millville HS) and fired a shot past UMD junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons/UMass Lowell).

UMass Dartmouth then scored twice early in the third period to put the game away. Sophomore defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) fired home a slap shot from the point 30 seconds into the period. Senior forwards Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) and Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) assisted. Dudley’s brother, (freshman forward) Rob (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) scored his first goal of the season less than three minutes later, at 3:28. Mickey Dudley and freshman forward Paul Graham (Quincy, MA/Northern Cyclones) drew the assists.

The Corsairs took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Senior defenseman Eric Quinlan (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) flipped home a rebound at 7:52, with Shore and Paquin assisting. Freshman forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) made it 2-0 at 11:49 when he one-timed home a shot from the slot with the Corsairs on the power play. Junior defenseman Chris Carpenter (Westford, MA/Berkshire School) and sophomore defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen-EJHL) drew assists on the play. Sophomore forward Michael Dwyer (Somerville, MA/Worcester Academy) cut the UMass Dartmouth lead to 2-1 when scored for Assumption at 17:36, assisted by freshman forward Joe Frasso (Winthrop, MA/Winthrop HS) and junior forward Ben Kirtland (Plymouth, MA/Holderness HS).

“We haven’t played in 30 days, and there was certainly some rust that we had to get rid of,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I thought we played pretty well. We showed some improvement as far as scoring was concerned, and that’s something we needed to work on. It was good to get a power play goal, and I thought we did a decent job of killing penalties.”

The Corsairs out shot the Greyhounds, 34-20. Dryjowicz-Burek made 18 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while DiDomenico and junior Jamie DiGiulio (Peabody, MA/Tilton School) combined to make 29 saves for Assumption. UMass Dartmouth converted one of four power play chances, and killed all four Assumption opportunities.

The Corsairs improved to 6-4-1 and 4-1-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while the Greyhounds dropped to 2-8-2 and 1-3-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Worcester State next Tuesday night, while Assumption will host Suffolk next Thursday.
