HOCKEY TEAM FALLS TO UMASS BOSTON, 3-2

NEW BEDFORD, MA–Visiting UMass Boston scored a pair of third-period goals and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team, 3-2, in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Tuesday evening.

Vinnie Jacona broke the tie for the Beacons in the third period, firing home his own rebound at 1:02 of the third period after Corsair junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) stopped his initial shot on a two on one rush. Matt Atsoff made it 3-1 when he re-directed Eric Tufman’s pass from point-blank range at 14:04. With Green off for an extra attacker and two UMass Boston players in the penalty box, senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) ripped home a one-timer to make it 3-2 with 31 seconds remaining. But the Beacons held off the Corsairs the rest of the way.

The teams entered the third period tied at 1-1. Sophomore defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm) got the equalizer for UMass Dartmouth on a power play at 6:02 of the second period, converting a pass from freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) and firing home a high wrist shot from the slot. Junior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) also assisted.

Green preserved the lead, stopping Tufman’s penalty shot with 4:04 to play in the second period. Tufman, who was awarded the penalty shot when he was tripped on a breakaway, broke in on Green, faked, and tried a backhand shot, but Green stopped him.

UMass Boston took a 1-0 lead at the 7:23 mark of the first period when defenseman Brett Calhoun scored a power play goal, firing home a slap shot from the right point. Eric Tufman and Kris Kranzky assisted.

“It was a tough game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We put forth one of our better efforts, but we got caught on a pinch for a two on one on their winning goal. We had some good chances to score against a good goaltender.”

The Corsairs, who converted two of their six power play opportunities while stopping the Beacons on four of their five chances, out shot UMass Boston, 31-26. Green made 23 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Ryan Donovan made 29 stops for the Beacons.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 8-6-1 with the defeat, while the Beacons improved to 8-6-1 with the win. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Southern New Hampshire in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Saturday, while UMass Boston will visit Salem State in an ECAC East game Friday night.
