UMASS DARTMOUTH BLANKS FITCHBURG STATE, 3-0

FITCHBURG, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored two power play goals and killed off 10 penalties en route to a 3-0 victory over host Fitchburg State in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast hockey game at the Wallace Civic Center Saturday night.

UMass Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) stopped all 29 Falcon shots for his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his career. He stopped all 15 FSC shots in the period, in which the Falcons out shot UMass Dartmouth, 15-12 and failed to score despite four power play chances, including a five on three advantage for 55 seconds.

Sophomore forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) scored the first goal of the game on the power play, assisted by senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and junior forward Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) at 6:24 of the first period. Senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) made it 2-0 90 seconds later when he converted a pass from junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) for another power play goal at 7:54. Junior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) made it 3-0 when he scored at 7:29 of the second period.

“Jeff Green was very big and very solid, and very much in control between the pipes,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “He played very well and his play was a key to winning the game. We had to kill off quite a few penalties, and Jeff Green’s play, the two power play goals and our penalty killing made the difference tonight. This was a much tighter game than it was the first time we played them. This is the toughest stretch of the season, as far as the ECAC Northeast is concerned, and we just want to keep on putting wins behind us.”

UMass Dartmouth out shot Fitchburg State, 31-29. Falcon goalie Devan McConnell made 28 saves, and the Corsairs killed off all 10 FSC power plays while converting two of their four chances with a man advantage.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 17-1-1 and 9-0-0 in conference play with the victory, while Fitchburg State fell to 10-7-2 and 6-2-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast match up Wednesday evening.
