UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS SUFFOLK, 5-2

SOMERVILLE, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team seized an early lead and put the game away with two third period goals, defeating Suffolk, 5-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast hockey game at the Veterans Memorial Rink Wednesday evening.

Junior forwards Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) and Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) scored third period goals to help the Corsairs clinch the win. Grant fired a wrist shot past Ram starting goalie Sean Bertoni at 4:37 of the third period to make it 4-2. The goal prompted the removal of Bertoni, who had stopped 29 of 33 shots. Vrolyk scored his second goal of the game when he beat backup goaltender Mark Grignon with a shot from a sharp angle at 13:31 of the third period.

Senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks) staked the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead when he fired home a wrist shot from the slot at 11:12 of the first period. McCullough’s goal was the only score of the period, in which UMD held a 17-3 advantage in shots.

Scott Zanolli tied the game at 6:02 of the second period when he slid the rebound of John Delaney’s shot past UMass Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Jeff Green. Junior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) broke the tie at 8:32 of the second period, and Vrolyk’s first goal of the game, a shot from the corner that deflected in off Bertoni, made it 3-1 at 14:45.

The Rams cut the lead less than a minute later. John Rocchio was credited with their second goal of the game when Tim Recio’s shot hit him and deflected into the net at 15:24 of the second period.

“I am happy to put another win behind us,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “Suffolk played very hard. They have a good, skilled first line, and they gave us all we could handle. We have to keep taking things one game at a time.”

Grant and McCullough each finished with a goal and an assist for the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth out shot Suffolk, 39-35. But the Rams fired 32 shots on goal to UMD’s 22 in the second and third periods.

Green made 33 saves, while Bertoni and Grignon combined to make 34 stops.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 16-1-1 and 8-0-0 in conference play with the victory, while Suffolk fell to 4-12-1 and 3-5-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State in an ECAC Northeast match up Saturday night.
