PROVIDENCE HOCKEY DEFEATS BOSTON COLLEGE, 6-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team defeated Boston
College, 6-4, in a HOCKEY EAST league contest on Friday, January 25 at PC's
Schneider Arena. With the win, the Friars move two points ahead of the
Eagles in the HOCKEY EAST league standings, into sixth place by themselves.
The Friars (11-12-3 overall/6-7-1 HE) opened the game with two quick goals
in the contest's first three-plus minutes. Junior co-captain Devin Rask
(Parkside, Sask.) lifted a backhanded over BC goaltender Matti Kaltiainen's
left shoulder for his ninth goal of the season. Freshman forward Chris
Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) assisted on the goal. A minute-and-a-half later,
senior center Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) fired a shot from the left side
past Kaltiainen on the power play to increase PC's lead to 2-0. Rask and
junior co-captain Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) assisted on the goal.
Providence added its' third goal of the contest at the 16:30 mark of the
first period when Fregoe tipped sophomore defenseman Jason Platt's (Portola
Valley, Calif.) shot from the point past Kaltiainen for the score.
DiSalvatore picked up the second assist on the goal.
Boston College (12-11-2/5-9-1 HE) got on the scoreboard in the second
period, as Dave Spina scored for the Eagles on the power play. The Friars
had an answer for BC, though, as sophomore Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.)
and senior forward Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) scored within three
minutes of each other to increase PC's lead to 5-1.
The Eagles scored three unanswered goals in the third period, cutting the
Friars lead to 5-4 with 4:28 to play in regulation. A.J. Walker scored just
2:18 into the final frame to cut PC's lead to 5-2. Jeff Giuliano scored at
the 7:22 mark to whittle the Friars lead to two goals and Ned Havern scored
with 4:28 remaining to pull BC to within one goal of the Friars.
The Eagles pulled goaltender Matti Kaltiainen with 53 seconds to play for
the extra attacker, but a slashing penalty called on Dave Spina left five
skaters aside on the ice. Providence capitalized on Spina's penalty, as
DiSalvatore fed Rask for the empty net goal with 19 seconds remaining to
seal the Friar victory.
Providence's Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) made 31 saves in the
victory while Kaltiainen recorded 15 saves in the loss.
The two teams play for the final time in the regular season on Sunday,
January 27 at BC's Kelley Rink at 3:00 p.m. The game will be telecast live
on FOX Sports New England.
