BOSTON - Tony Voce scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in
the second period as Boston College defeated Providence College, 5-3, in
the Hockey East championship game at the FleetCenter.
The Friars opened the scoring in the first period with a goal just over
two minutes into the game. Drew Omicioli scored off a rebound in the
slot of a Peter Zingoni shot. Boston College tied the game, 1-1, when
Mike Lephart circled the net and scored a shorthanded goal with 5:26
remaining in the period.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead when Voce scored on a breakaway with a
backhand shot to the top shelf. Boston College extended its lead to 3-1
before the end of the period. Krys Kolanos scored his 23rd goal of the
season when he banged home a loose puck from the side of the net.
Voce scored his second goal of the game and 12th of the season at the
13:37 mark of the second period with a wrist shot from the slot on the
power play. Providence responded with a goal less than 30 seconds later
when Mike Lucci scored after collecting a loose puck in the slot. The
Friars cut the lead to one when Adam Lee skated out from behind the net
and fired a low shot that beat Boston College goaltender Scott
Clemmensen between the pads.
Brian Gionta gave Boston College a 5-3 lead when he scored on a high
wrist shot from the slot off a feed from Ben Eaves. It was Gionta's 33rd
goal of the season.
Providence goaltender Nolan Schaefer finished the game with 42 saves,
while Clemmensen ended the game with 12 saves in the net for the Eagles.
The victory improves Boston College to 30-8-2 on the season, while the
Friars are now 22-12-5. It marks just the second time in school history
that the Eagles have recorded 30 or more wins in a season. They finished
the 1986-87 season with 31 victories.
This is the Eagles fifth Lamoriello Trophy and third in the past four
years. Boston College is now tied with Boston University for the most
Hockey East championships. Chuck Kobasew of Boston College won the
William Flynn Trophy as the tournament MVP.
