Here are the seeds for the 1992 Massachusetts Division 1A (also known as
the "Super 8") high school tourney:
1 Catholic Memorial (19-1-0)
2 Matignon (20-0-0)
3 Woburn (15-1-2)
4 St John's Prep (14-4-2)
5 Don Bosco (14-4-2)
6 Newton North (19-0-1)
7 Reading (15-2-3)
8 Arlington (16-4-0)
This tourney, a compromise between the Catholic and public schools in
Eastern Mass., involves the top four Catholic schools and the top four
public schools. Catholics were seeded 1, 2, 4, and 5 this time. The top
seed, Catholic Memorial, was the champion of the state's toughest conference,
the Catholic Conference. CM has won the state championship 5 of the last
6 years, I believe. Matignon, the 2nd seed, holds numerous state titles
itself from the late 70s and early 80s, and St John's won in 1985. All
three have sent hundreds of players onto college; current US Olympian Shawn
McEachern is a Matignon alumnus and led his team to a 24-0-0 record four
years ago.
The tourney is a double-elimination tourney with winners and losers
brackets. The championship will be played at Boston Garden either Sat
March 7, or Wed March 11. NESN will likely broadcast the championship
game again.
The tourney begins next Mon Feb 24 at Boston Garden. Games will be played
at the Garden, BU, BC and Merrimack during the two weeks.
Many of the players from the eight teams will be headed to college to play
next year, and a number are considered good bets to be drafted by NHL teams.
