RPI and Bowling Green came out of the gate running
last night and certainly showed no signs of their 3 week layoff for semester break. BGSU got on the board just 36 seconds into the game when an RPI defenseman was trapped at center ice giving the Falcons a 2 on 1 which they capitalized on. It was a rough and tumble game with a lot of the heavy hitting more characteristic of a CCHA game rather than the ECAC. However, referee Dan Murphy seemed comfortable with that style of play and let the more physical style of play continue. Bowling Green took advantage of the officiating style (since it more closely resembled their regular style
of play) but, to the Engineers credit, they adjusted their
style of play accordingly.

RPI tied the game at 1-1 at 5:33 of the first when Pete Gardiner picked up the puck in his own zone just 4 seconds
after a Falcon power play expired and hit a streaking Brad Tapper who broke in alone and beat Shawn Timm for Tapper's 19th goal(in 15 games).

The teams played even through the second period despite several 10-15 minute delays where referee Murphy spent more time sorting out penalty minutes than the penalized players were assessed. At 9:08 of the second, RPI broke into the Falcon zone on an odd man rush. Defenseman BJ Adams skated in behind the play and lifted the net off its mooring and was immediately whistled for delay of game. RPI took advantage on the ensuing power play going up 2-1 on a goal by defenseman Jared Reigstad. Bowling Green fought back and evened up the score at 2-2 on their own power play goal at 17:44 on a goal by Ryan Murphy when he fired the puck through a crowd in front of the net and the puck richocheted off several people
and finally caromed in off RPI's Steve Caley.

RPI regained the lead 3-2 at 4:06 of the third period on a goal from Doug Shepherd. Bowling Green put on a lot of offensive pressure from that point on but Joel Laing, once again, saved the Engineers with outstanding netminding. The
Falcons controlled play for the last minute and a half after
they pulled Timm in favor of a sixth skater and spent a good portion of that time in mad scrambles in front of the RPI net. The Engineers got several lucky breaks when Murphy blew some quick whistles during scrums in front of Laing when he lost sight of the puck thinking it was tied up.

Regardless, a win is a win and RPI is propelled into the championship game tonight against Providence College at
approximately 8:30 PM.
