Okay, here's what I've been able to do to distill the ECAC
playoff picture. This chart gives every teams points for (2 x wins +
1 x ties) and points against (1 x ties and 2 x losses), their schedule
for the last week of the season, and their "magic numbers", in terms
of points, to finish ahead of each other team in the ECAC. A "0"
indicates they've already clinched, and an "xx" indicates they cannot
finish above that team. The areas in the middle are described by
three different kinds of entries, which I'll illustrate by particular
examples:
Harvard-SLU 2 / SLU-Harvard 7
This kind of entry (unfortunately rare) occurs when one team
always wins the tiebreaker over another. A total of points for
Harvard and against SLU of 2 or more means the Crimson finish ahead of
the Saints.
Clarkson-Cornell 2. / Cornell-Clarkson 6.
This indicates that the tiebreaker between these teams could
go either way. Thus Clarkson needs 2 points to finish ahead of
Cornell in some cases and 3 in others. (The 2. is short for 2.5)
RPI-Vermont 4+ / Vermont-RPI 5-
This means that one team (here RPI) wins a tiebreaker with the
other if only those two are tied, but it can go the other way if they
are part of a three-or-more-way tie. Thus RPI needs 4 points to
finish tied with Vermont, and would win the two-way tiebreaker, but
might lose a three-way, in which case they need 5 points.
One note: Brown can finish ahead of Yale or Dartmouth, but not
both, and Jayson and I have detailed.
The details of this are based in part on the following
projected tie-breakers. (I only got through the top half of the
league, and some of the two-way ties I didn't finish.) The numbers in
parentheses are the number of points with which the teams could finish
in a tie. A ">" means the team on the left beats the team(s) to the
right. Unlabelled records are head-to-head (in terms of points). In
a three (or more) team tie-breaker, if some teams are tied in the
total head-to-head, those teams revert to the two-team tiebreaker, so
the next head-to-head record is among only those teams that were tied
in the initial head-to-head. Occasionally, there is a third record;
this is against the top four. Best of luck to anyone who wants to
use, build on, check these. I can't guarantee there isn't an error
here or in the magic number grid.
