at BOSTON UNIVERSITY 5, MAINE 4 (Fri)
The Terriers were outshot 44-23 but got the game-winner when freshman Mike
Prendergast scored a shorthanded goal with just 21 seconds left. Mark
Bavis and Prendergast worked hard to get the puck into the Maine zone and
got some luck when Cal Ingraham fell, allowing Prendergast to carry up
the right side. Garth Snow kicked out Prendergast's first shot to the
right corner, but Bavis was there to send it back in front where Prendergast
banged it in.
It was a game of comebacks as Maine roared out to a lead in the first
period, saw BU score the only three goals of the second to go up 4-2,
then came back to tie in the third before the finale. The DRuM line of
Downey-Montgomery-Roy accounted for the Black Bears' first goal, Montgomery
getting the tally, on the power play at 3:16. 46 seconds later Nick
Vachon tied it for BU. The Terriers got an extended power play when
Downey was hit with a major for hitting from behind, but Maine's special
teams rose to the occasion and allowed few chances. Montgomery scored
his second of the game and season with 2:38 left to make it 2-1.
Defenseman Tom Dion scored twice in the second to make it 3-2 BU, then Jon
Pratt gave the Terriers a two-goal lead with 1:01 left in the period. In
the third, Scott Pellerin scored at 5:20 and then Ingraham tied it up at
15:20 before Prendergast's heroics at 19:39. Scott Cashman made 40 saves
for BU while Snow made 18 for Maine. Attendance was 3,304, just 380 short
of capacity.
MAINE 8, at BOSTON UNIVERSITY 1 (Sat)
What a difference a night makes. 3,485 showed up after BU's upset on
Friday night, but Maine got four power plays and handed BU its worst defeat
since 1985 when the Terriers were pounded 10-1 by BC. Pellerin and Downey
each scored twice and Montgomery and Roy each added 1-3--4. It was 4-1
after the first and 6-1 after two.
Downey's goal at 5:24 of the first was answered by Jon Jacques of BU at
6:29, but then Pellerin sandwiched two goals around one by Roy for the
4-1 lead. Montgomery and Steve Widmeyer scored in the second, after which
Cashman (22 saves) was pulled for John McKersie, who stopped 10 of 12 shots
in the third. Downey and Andy Silverman each beat McKersie to close the
scoring. Snow stopped 25 shots as Maine outshot BU 40-26.
UMASS-LOWELL 8, at PROVIDENCE 6 (Sat)
The upstart Chiefs are 2-0 in HE after shocking the Friars on their home
ice for the second time in 14 days. Dave Gatti scored three goals and
Mike Murray added a goal and three assists. Rob Gaudreau and Chris Therien
each had a goal and three assists to lead the Friars. UML vaulted out
to a 3-1 lead after one on two goals by Gatti and one by Tim Smallwood.
It went to 6-1 in the second when Gatti completed his trick and Dan
O'Connell and Gerry Daley scored, but Gaudreau and Chad Quenneville each
scored late in the period to cut the lead to 6-3. In the third, Dave
Stevens gave Lowell a 7-3 lead before PC jumped back in it with three PPGs
from Therien (5:19), Craig Darby (15:34) and Gary Socha (16:56), but
Murray notched the empty-netter with 29 seconds left. The Chiefs were
outshot 45-37. Mark Richards got the win and stopped 39 PC shots while
Brad Mullahy made 29 saves in the PC net.
PROVIDENCE 6, at NORTHEASTERN 0 (Fri)
In the HE opener for both teams, PC got goals from six different players
and Gaudreau and Therien each had 1-2--3 while Mike Heinke stopped 19
shots to earn the shutout. Bob Cowan and Mike Boback scored late in the
first and Craig Darby scored halfway through the 2nd to give PC a 3-0
lead after two. Gaudreau, Chad Quenneville and Therien all beat Tom Cole
(21 saves) in the third. Tom Cole had 21 saves for NU, which was outshot
27-19.
at NEW HAMPSHIRE 6, NORTHEASTERN 4 (Sat)
UNH ran its record to 7-0-0, getting two goals from Scott Morrow, three
assists from Savo Mitrovic and 1-2--3 from Domenic Amodeo as both of
the Wildcats' top two lines figured heavily in the scoring. The Huskies,
who trailed 3-1 after two and 5-1 eight minutes into the third, were led
by Chris Foy (1-2--3). Jeff Levy had 25 saves for UNH, while Cole
stopped 41 but surrendered six goals for the second straight night.
