I had to think for awhile about the greatest game, but this one is easy.
The 1989 Championship game. It was the last of the really great Gopher
teams that spanned the mid-late 80s. Since then we've been forced to
settle for very good teams (poor Minnesota fans), at least until this year,
perhaps.
Worse, though, than the way the game ended (Skarda's pipe-shot followed
by Krayer's goal) was that within five minutes (right after the silence
Matt Rein described) I was listening to people ask for Doug Woog's firing.
The man had only taken Minnesota to the Final Four in each of his first
four years, and all these clowns could talk about was that he hadn't won
The Big One. Ppphhht. It hasn't even ended yet. Last week, one of the
Star-Tribune sportswriters informed us that the Gophers choked again in the
semi-final last year. Did anyone else think Minnesota was at all likely to
win that game? Or is Patrick Reusse incapable of distinguishing a hockey
puck from one of those things in a urinal?
