Maine outshot Lowell 40-14 enroute to an easy 6-0 blanking of the
River Hawks in the Hockey East Consolation Game.  Maine moves on to
what will likely be a #2 seed and bye in the NCAA East Regional
next week in Worcester, MA.
 
Maine got goals from six different players.  Tim Lovell was
credited with two assists officially, but I believe he should have
had a third on the third Maine goal.
 
The Black Bears bounced back from their tough loss to PC in the
semifinals to dominate this game from start to finish.  On the
negative side, it often seemed that some Lowell players, perhaps
knowing this was their last game of the year, were not interested
in playing hockey.  Lowell was called for 56 minutes in penalties
to Maine's 26.
 
HE leading scorer and Hobey Baker nominee (?) Greg Bullock had one
shot on goal in the game and picked up 19 minutes in penalties over
the last half of the second period.  After a scuffle with Maine's
Dave MacIsaac drew Bullock a minor for roughing (and MacIsaac a
double rough), Bullock returned to the ice only to get into a
slashing duel with Maine's Jacque Rodrigue.  Just before the
whistle, Bullock raised his stick menacingly towards Rodrigue and
the two had to be separated.  Bullock jawed with referee Jim
Fitzgerald after he was taken to the box and continued even as the
teams prepared for the faceoff.  Fitzgerald had to come over and
warn Bullock to knock it off.
 
Right after Bullock got out, he laid a vicious cross-check on
Jeff Libby that drew him a major and misconduct.  Apparently UML
coach Bruce Crowder had seen enough, because Bullock never returned
for the rest of the game.  Speculation was that Bullock's college
career was over, and several folks opined that they would not be
surprised to see him sign as a free agent in the coming weeks.  His
performance tonight causes him to end the season with 125 PIM.  He
drew 35 PIM in the two HE final four games alone.
 
Crowder's heavy-handed approach to the tactics Bullock and some
other Lowell players were taking drew him a lot of respect from
fans and media alike.  The third period was relatively uneventful,
except for a late charging penalty and misconduct against Christian
Sbrocca.  This came with 48 seconds left, and whether Crowder
yanked Sbrocca off the ice or the officials sent him to the locker
room is unknown, but either way, Sbrocca was not on the ice for the
final handshakes.
 
I could not help but think that if I were Crowder, a respected and
outstanding coach, I would have been extremely upset with Bullock
and other players who failed to adequately represent my program and
school.  Frustration at the way Lowell lost a tough game to BU
the night before and was having trouble against Maine is
understandable.  But there just isn't any excuse for the way Bullock
and others acted tonight.  I commend Crowder for the way he refused
to stand for the garbage and hope he is able to bring Lowell back
next year as a team that can play tough (as against BU) but also as
a team that will stop hurting itself with bad penalties.
