BOSTON, Mass. -- Providence erupted in the second period to
score five goals in a span of 10:40 against Maine en route to a 7-3
win in Hockey East semifinal action Friday afternoon at Boston
Garden.
The Friars' win over the No. 1 seeded Black Bears was their
second straight upset in the HE tournament. Last week the No. 6
Friars defeated the No. 3 New Hampshire Wildcats in the
quarterfinal round.
This was the first time this year that Maine has given up six
goals in a game.
The Friars (14-16-6) will meet the winner of tonight's UMass-Lowell
vs. Boston University semifinal Saturday night at 8 p.m. for the HE
championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament.
Maine (28-4-6) will play the loser of tonight's semifinal in
tomorrow's HE consolation game Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
Maine outshot Providence 50-24.
The loss is expected to hurt Maine's chances of securing the
top seed in the NCAA east regional next week in Worcester, Mass.
