Whatta game -- what looked early on to be a BC blowout turned out to be a
close, emotional contest truly worthy of a Beanpot game. In the end,
BC's first period 4-goal cushion was all they needed to withstand the
Crimson rally and pull out the big win.
IMO, the key to the Eagles' success was their tight defensive play,
backed up by some strong goaltending by sophomore netminder Greg Taylor,
who, although he wasn't spectacular, made some very big saves at key
moments. Harvard's game plan was to use their speed to get alot of shots
off and look for rebounds, but the BC defense repeatedly forced the
Crimson forwards wide of the net and prevented them from getting many good
shots. I was particularly impressed with the play of BC
defensemen Tom Ashe and Brad Carlson. In addition, Taylor was very stingy
about giving up rebounds, and showed lightning quick glove which robbed
more than one Crimson forward of a goal.
I completely agree with Steve Czuba's comments regarding Tripp Tracy's
goaltending. He looked VERY tentative, which is bad news for a goalie like
Tracy, whose style is to play the angles and be aggressive. He was
constanlty out of position, which resulted in BC's first and last goals.
The Eagles seem to be a speedier and craftier team than they were last
year, which permitted them to thoroughly take advantage of some of
Harvard's defensive lapses: BC's Don Chase robbed the puck off the stick
of hesitant Harvard defenseman Jeremiah McCarthy at his blue line and
went in alone on Tracy to tally the Eagles' 6th goal; also BC's fourth
goal resulted from an unmolested Peter Masters calmly delivering a
beautiful feed to Brian Callahan who was all alone in front of the net
even though there were 4 Harvard players around the net.
Fortunately, Harvard decided to make a game of it even though they found
themselves in a big hole. This resulted in a wild and wooly 2nd period
in which 4 goals were scored in the last five minutes. But even though
Harvard managed to score 6 goals in their comeback attempt, BC never
failed to score at key moments and keep the game a little farther out of
the Crimson's reach. By the time Harvard closed the Eagles' lead to 1
goal, there were only a little over 3 minutes remaining and BC used their
tough, physical defense to see the game through.
All in all, a very entertaining game. Kudos to BC for winning and to
Harvard for not giving up.

GO CRIMSON!!

P.S. About BC's #11 Jim Krayer -- is he related to former Harvard forward
Eddie Krayer (also #11) who scored in overtime to win the Crimson's 1989
NCAA title?
