Tonight UIC fell behind quickly on a goal due to a defensive lapse.
They got right back at it on a beautiful goal by Bob Gohde. He
called for the puck and skated right in from the point. Matt
McElwee put the puck right on his stick and Bob one-timed it past
goalie Tom Askey. UIC's second goal was scored by Shaun
Summerville on a rocket off the post from the left circle. The
third goal was scored by Mark Zdan on a 2 on 1 shorthanded
breakaway.

UIC added a second shorthanded goal poked in by Mike Peron off a
defensive zone faceoff. At 12:31 of the second period yet another
defensive lapse allowed Kevin O'keefe to sit at the post and stuff
a pass past the reach of Askey for a power play goal. This got to
Askey, and he broke his stick with an overhand chop on the top bar
of the cage. He was given a 10 minute misconduct, and was never to
return to the game. His replacement, Kurt Brown, did not wait long
before getting into the swing of things. At 15:08 he received a 2
minute minor for roughing after throwing an obvious punch after a
play at the net.

I was under the impression that the refs were told to call a punch
as a fight this year. Is this correct? If it is, we have not been
seeing much of it at UIC. This brings up another question, if the
goalie was given a penalty that required him to sit in the box,
this would leave the team without a goalie. Would they be required
to have a non-goalie play goal until one was released from the box
or is there an exception that allows the goalie to continue on the
ice?

In the third period OSU opened the scoring on a 2 on 1 break. I
think they were 4 on 4 at this time, but the scoresheets are not
clear on this. UIC responded 2 minutes later on Mark Zdan's second
goal of the game. This was a put-in on a pass to the far post on
the power play. OSU responded 2 minutes later on Randy Holmes's
second goal of the period: a wraparound goal into an empty net.
It was apparently not the game for OSU goalies tonight. Derek
Knorr finished the scoring on a power play goal from the left
circle. This power play had resulted when goalie, Kurt Brown, was
given a tripping penalty after pulling down a UIC player as OSU was
moving out of the defensive zone. I can't remember a game where
goalies were given 3 penalties during the game, nor a game where a
goalie sat in the penalty box.

Flame Notes:

The fall semester honor roll is out, and I would like to
congratulate the following student athletes:
Shannon Finn: Business
Jeff Blum: Kinesiology
Mark Zdan: Business
Kevin O'Keefe: Liberal Arts
Darren Tymchyshyn: Business

UIC increased its shorthanded goal performance tonight. We have now
scored 6 shorthanders while giving up none. | Clay Awe is
still out due to a broken finger suffered at Providence. Chris
MacDonald sat out tonight's game for unknown reasons. | UIC
is now 9-0-1 when leading after two periods. | Mike Peron now
has an 8 game point streak in which he has gone 6-3-8 | Next
year's schedule won't be out for a while, but pencil in the big
green of Dartmouth for a series here at the Pavilion next season.
UIC still has an open weekend yet to fill, which was slated for a
Hockey East team, which now had to pull out. | Colin Chin,
one of UIC's all time greats, is now an assistant coach for the
Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL. Chin, whose season is over after an
injury earlier this year, will work behind the bench for the 1994
IHL finalists.
