Summary:
 
Well, it's too bad Union's great second half had to end in a blowout,
but that's what happened Sunday night at RPI.  Union fell behind early
and was never really in this one, although they played a decent game.
 
Most of the game has been written about quite a bit already, so I'll
just add a few things.  First off, Neil Little.  He only faced 21
shots, but he was just outstanding.  As others have said, it's hard to
believe he's the same goalie who lost on Friday night.  Another player
who came up with the big plays for RPI was Craig Richardson.  He had a
hat trick in this one (yes, there was one hat thrown out on the ice),
and was a big problem for the Dutchmen in the games back in January
too.  How about 30 shots in the first period (RPI 18, Union 12)?
Union has improved but they showed that they're not ready to get into
a shootout like that with the Engineers.  Special teams were big in
this one too.  RPI was also able to keep Union's power play under
control (I think they were 0 for their last 11 power plays in the
series) and put the puck in the net when they got a chance on the
power play.
 
I don't think anyone in the fieldhouse was happy with the officiating.
They really let a lot of stuff go, and I thought things were going to
get out of control.  I thought Neil Little got away with a little too
much extra after the whistle a few times (he was called for one
2-minute minor).  The Dutchmen got away with a few too.  I'm amazed
things didn't get ugly in the 3rd period.
 
Union played pretty well in this one.  Yes, they lost by 5 goals and
were outshot by way too much, but they had their chances.  They put on
a good showing in the series, and now Coach Delventhal will have a
team full of guys with playoff experience.  It was nice to see Jeff
Jiampetti get the final goal of the season.  He's the only senior on
this year's team, and the last Division III player.  I also thought it
was great seeing the crowd's nice standing ovation for Neil Little as
he left the ice for the last time at the fieldhouse.
 
Someone asked why the Union attendance was down so much.  Definitely
because Union had final exams starting today.  I know a few people who
had 8:30 AM exams so they had to pass up game 3.  I don't know when
the players were supposed to study.  Classes ended Friday.  3 games in
3 days, then exams start.  All part of being a student-athlete, I
guess.  And as far as the violin for the National Anthems at RPI...
Yes it was nice, but not if you were in my seat with a loudspeaker
pointed right at you.  Some of those notes were painful at that
volume...  Maybe back away from the microphone a little bit next time.
 
The Dutchmen finish up at 15-11-4.  I don't know too many people who
would have guessed that.  I'll have more on the season as a whole when
I can get a hold of some final stats and I get a little time to write
something up.  Now if I can just hide from all this College Basketball
until baseball season begins, maybe I'll be OK.
