There was a log of discussion on this topic ( a couple years ago I think).
You might find it interesting to read some of it.  It included things
about the number of teams participating vs the size of the playoff field.
 
Of course BB is the biggest tournament and FB can't get one going with even
two teams in the tournament.  And with the recent expansion to 12 teams
from 8, maybe hockey isn't doing too badly after all.
