As mentioned in my previous message, the fourth Union goal from
Saturday night's game was scored several seconds after the net was
dislodged by RPI's goalie Nathan Marsters.

From the official NCAA Hockey rulebook
(http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2001_ice_hockey_rules_book.pdf),
page HR-51, Section 9c:

"A player, including the goalkeeper, shall not delay the game by
deliberately displacing a goal post from its normal position. The
appropriate on-ice official shall stop play when a goal post has been
displaced. Note: If the non-offending team has an offensive
opportunity, play shall be allowed to continue until the scoring
chance is complete."

It sounds like the call was valid, although I admit I had never heard
of the last part before. The key, however, is the word "deliberately"
in the above rule. Sometimes it's obvious that a net is being pushed
off intentionally, but in this case I don't know. Referee Tim Kotyra
thought it was intentional, but RPI coach Dan Fridgen and his players
clearly did not.
