I don't think the team "quickly disproved its ranking."  In fact, Cornell had a
very strong season, and was (seemingly) comfortably in first place going into
the last 4 games of the season.
 
Needing 3 pts in 4 games to clinch 1st place, the Red went 1-3 or 0-3-1 down
the stretch to lose the conference regular season. They then crushed Colgate in
two games at home in the quarters and appeared to "right the ship" but lost in
OT to SLU at the Garden. They managed to make the NCAA Tournament anyway based
on the strength of the rest of their season, so they must have done pretty well
for most of the year.
