Mark provided the box and recap (with more brevity than I
usually do!) so I'll just add some details and comments.

From watching the replay, this was an interesting roughing match.
First of all, it was unexpected. The game had been hard hitting,
and kinda slow, but it didn't look like there were lots of cheap shots
either way, and it didn't look to get out of hand.
 
Both teams were already 1 man down, on matching slashing calls (from
a faceoff) Derksen was on his stomach, at the top of the crease. Four
or six players were piled up (and already wrestling) at about the goal
line (the puck was under Derksen). A CC player fell over Derksen, who
put his arm over his shoulders, to sort of hold the player there and
prevent him from hitting him, or anything. They looked at each other,
let each other up, and then turned to see what was going on behind them
(the big wrestling match).
 
At this point, players had separated a bit, and just about everyone was
paired off (remember, CC had pulled their goalie, so they had one more
skater at the Wisconsin end). Both players tried to pull someone off
the pile, and then Derksen skated after Wisconsin's Jason Zent and his
dance partner, looking to get Zent out of it. CC's extra skater
"tagged" Derksen (by grabbing loosely on his sweater), and Derksen
tagged back. Zent and his partner *could* have had a fight (which Zent
would have "won", since the other player's jersey was in the way, he
was missing his helmet, etc. Instead, they each had one hand on the
other's jersey, and their right hand back, ready to throw a punch, and
they kept circling and not punching.  Likewise, none of the other
pair-ups seemed to want to fight .... maybe a grand total of 5 punches
were thrown.
 
Bill Howard (Wisconsin goalie coach and radio/tv commemtator) said
everyone on the ice should get double minors, bring in a new
goalie, and get the final 27 seconds over with. Instead, Shepard
gave two on each side 4+10, and Derksen 2 minutes for leaving the
crease. In a close game or other other circumstances, I would say
this was a bad call, but I guess he *did* leave the crease and
did have a partner....
 
Curiously, Wisconsin did not end up shorthanded. Both teams were
already down 1 player, 2 of the 4 matching double-minors were put
up, and derksen's penalty would only have been served after all
the double-minors were over... which didn't happen because there
were only 27 seconds left.
 
Since no one punched anyone, I thought the 4+10 was a bit strong, but I
guess Shepard wanted to send a message.  Unfortunatly, Tucker and Block
didn't get it......

				Showdown
 
Wisconsin practices Monday and Tuesday this week, then takes two
weeks off (Captains' practices only) to comply with NCAA rules.
Finals are next week (Sunday-Saturday) so this is a good time for
a break...

Add an ouch for Yale -- they are (unofficially) ranked 7th in this
week's TCHCR, to Maine's #2 and Wisconsin's #16.
 
Doug Macdonald may be back in time for the shootout. Wisconsin is
now officially half-way through the regular season, playing every
WCHA team twice, except North Dakota (none) and Michigan Tech 4
times, due to the last-minute NCAA-mandated schedule changes.
Techinically, Wiconsin is alone in first place in the league, but
no other team has played as many games, so it won't last long.
