In the home opener for Merrimack, converted D Eric Weichselbaumer
sent the fans home happy as he beat PC goalie Dan Dennis on the final
shot of the shootout to give Merrimack a shootout win over Providence,
1-0, after a 6-6 tie through regulation and OT. Merrimack goalie Martin
Legault stopped all five shooters he faced, including Chad Quenneville
and Brady Kramer.

The SO win gives Merrimack 3 points in the new HE scoring system. PC
took home 2 points for the tie. PC's record of 1-0-1 0 is good for 7
points and 4th place. Merrimack is 0-0-1 1 for 3 points, 7th.

A Hockey East record was set tonight for most combined power play
goals scored in a game, with each team scoring 5 PPGs. The total of
10 breaks the old record of 8, set on 11/8/88 by BU & PC. At one point,
six straight PPGs were scored in the game, 3 by each team.

The tie breaks an 11 game losing string for Merrimack dating back to
last season. The Warriors are still winless in their last 12. The six
goals in the game is the most scored by Merrimack since 2/4/94 in a 6-4
win over BC. That is a string of 15 games. The last time Merrimack
scored 6 goals without any being empty netters was 10/31/93 in a 6-5
win over Army, and 38 games had elapsed since then.

For Merrimack, stars were senior forward Mark Goble, who potted the
hat trick, all on the power play, and Matt Adams with a goal and 3
assists, also all on the power play. Freshman Casey Kesselring also
impressed with a goal and two assists and won faceoffs like no one since
Dan Gravelle.

Providence was led by Quenneville, who refused to let the Friars lose
and scored two goals in the third to bring his team back from a 6-4
deficit. Every time he touched the puck in the third, he made
something happen. Russ Guzior also chipped in three assists for a PC
power play that started out slow but came on strong in the second and
third.

Merrimack carried the play in the first, boosted by the loud fan
support, and the Warriors led 3-1 after one. But Paul Pooley got his
team jump started between the first and second, and the Friars would
have the better of the play much of the rest of the way, allowing no
goals at even strength. Every time it appeared that Merrimack was
ready to pull away, PC would answer back with a big PPG, keeping them
in position to tie in the third. The Friars got good play from their
top three lines, as did Merrimack.

With as many PPGs as were scored, the special teams were the story
of the game. Obviously, both teams had their power plays working well,
while penalty killing was atrocious.

Neither goalie shone nor was particularly lousy. Minus the special
teams, both Dennis and Legault allowed just one goal at even strength.
And many of the goals came on deflections, screens, or rebounds. When
the time came for the goalies to really be counted on - the last 12
minutes of regulation, 5 minutes of OT and the shootout - both stood
tall with only Dennis being beaten on the last shot of the shootout.

The teams meet again Saturday night at Providence's Schneider Arena
in the return match of this home and home.
