HOCKEY FALLS TO NICHOLS, 3-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA-Visiting Nichols scored two power play goals and freshman goaltender Jacob Rinn (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate HS) made 27 saves to lead the Bison to a 3-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Arena Wednesday evening.
The Bison scored their second and final power play goal 17 seconds into the third period. Senior defenseman Cole Ruwe (Pekin, IL/Peoria Mustangs) one-timed home a pass from senior forward Ryan Gervais (Chicago, IL/Chicago Force) to make it 3-0.

Sophomore Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) got the Corsairs on the board at 5:32 of the third period, converting passes from freshman forwards Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) and Shawn Manning (Stoughton, MA/Salisbury School). But UMass Dartmouth couldn’t beat Rinn again.

The Bison got on the scoreboard first, breaking a scoreless tie on a power play goal with 56 seconds remaining in the first period. Freshman forward Brett Englebright (Pekin, IL/River Brown Bears) scored when he one-timed home a pass from sophomore forward Will Munson (Corona, CA/Seguin Bears).

Freshman forward Zach Hendrickson (Farmingdale, NY/N.Y. Bobcats) made it 2-0, Nichols, when he re-directed a pass from sophomore forward Matt Roberts (Merrimac, MA/New England Huskies) past UMD junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) at 12:56 of the second period. Both teams had good chances in the period, with Rinn making point-blank saves on Corsair sophomore forwards Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) and Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) early in the period, and UMD senior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) hitting the post. Dryjowicz-Burek stopped Gervais from point blank range midway through the period, then foiled a short-handed breakaway by Roberts with less than two minutes remaining.

“The two power play goals were the difference,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “Nichiols did a good job of taking advantage of their power play opportunities, and we were hurt by our inability to capitalize on the power play. Too many times, we fought the puck or had good looks and missed the net. Overall, ot was a pretty good back and forth game.”

The Bison out shot the Corsairs, 29-28. Dryjowicz-Burek made 26 saves for UMD, while Rinn made 27 for Nichols.

The Corsairs are now 15-6-2 and 12-2-1 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Bison are now 20-3-0 and 14-1-0. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Johnson & Wales Saturday evening in the final game of the regular season. Nichols will host Western New England Sunday afternoon in their final regular season contest.
