Commission to look closely at Title IX

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration announced the creation of a panel
to assess the workings of Title IX Thursday. Proponents of the civil
rights law said they feared it was a first step in rolling back some of
the laws' regulations. U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige said the
15-member committee will submit recommendations by Jan. 31, 2003 on how
the law can be strengthened. He said DOE has not decided if it will
make changes in the laws' underlying regulations but will wait to see
the recommendations before deciding if any changes are warranted.
