If I remember correctly, enrolling for x credits starts a five-year
clock running.  Any eligibility not used within that time is lost.
 
I believe this was a reaction to a court decision or something like that
that allowed professionals in one sport to compete collegiately in another.
At the time, there was talk of Vida Blue playing quarterback or Reggie
Jackson, halfback.  (This is strictly from memory)
 
There are exceptions, the most notable is that years spent on LDS missions
do not count toward the five.  This is why Marty Haws was able to play for
Brigham Young from 83-84 till 89-90.
