                          Pep Band
Just want to follow up on the Pep Band discussion with some comments from
Cornell (I was never a band member here):

I agree with Beth W. that around Albany, where are you going to find a hockey
pep band but at RPI or Union? It was nice that RPI was at the Team USA-Team
Canada contest and got some exposure on CBS. But let's face it, how many times
a year do you see Hockey televised on national TV? As far as the network is
concerned, hockey comes around once every four years with the Olympics, and if
it weren't for the 1980 US gold medal, we probably won't see much hockey in
this country anyway.

The Cornell Pep Band is one of the most spirited bunch of people I know. They
do not received direct funding from the Athletic Department, but the band
itself or a semblance of the band (made up of students and alumni) will
normally show up at an away game. I remembered hearing the Band playing loudly
when Cornell beat Vermont 6-4 in Jan 91 (a spectacular come-from-behind
victory, if you recalled), and the Band was certainly at Michigan when Cornell
played them in NCAA first round this past season. The only time the Pep Band
is paid for being at an away game is usually the ECAC championship in Boston.
Just about every school that sent a team to the final four had a band there.
Therefore, RPI does not claim any exclusive right to be THE hockey pep band, SI
notwithstanding.

One final note: Last year I heard that RPI was changing its nickname from the
Engineers to the Big Red. I'm sorry, but Cornell IS the Big Red. Also, did
everyone notice the RPI Pep Band uniform on TV? Red and white rugby shirts?
Again, that has been Cornell's pep band uniform for years. I guess imitation
is the sincerest form of flattery.
