NEW WHEELS TO HIT TOWN
Roller hockey DareDevils to debut here June 1

by Mike Chambers, Denver Post Sports Writer

Daring to grab a share of Colorado's professional sporting interest,
Denver's new in-line roller hockey team was aptly named. The Denver
DareDevils, the newest member of Roller Hockey international, becomes the
state's sixth top-level professional franchise, and will begin play June 1
at McNichols Sports Arena.

In the player signings, the team owns rights to Colorado College senior
wing Peter Geronazzo and University of Denver senior defenseman Kelly
Hollinshead. Depending on whether Geronazzo, a Hobey Baker Mermorial Award
candidate, and Hollingshead, DU's gritty captain, get an opportunity to
play in the NHL or another professional ice hockey league, the two could
play for the DareDevils this coming season. Team executives also said they
hope to sign former DU star Angelo Ricci and want to talk to current
Pioneers senior Brent Cary after DU's season.

RHI commissioner Ralph Backstrom, who wrote the RHI rule book in 1991, shed
some light on the differences between roller and ice hockey. "It's an awful
lot like ice hockey, but different," said Backstrom, former 19-year NHL
veteran and 9-year DU head coach. "We wanted to eliminate dump and chase,
and bring the (quick) little guy and stick handling back into hockey."
