THE COACHES: Spartan Head Coach Ron Mason (St. Lawrence
'64) is in his 30th year in the college hockey coaching ranks, and in
his 17th year at MSU. The all-time winningest coach in collegiate
hockey, he sports a career record of 738-322-53 (449-212-39 @
MSU) and is more than 200 victories ahead of the second active
coach on the all-time Division I win list (Jeff Sauer of Wisconsin).

His Spartan teams have reached the NCAA Tournament 12 times in
the past 14 years (including the last two seasons, and nine straight
seasons between 1981-82 and 1989-90), have won 20 or more
games in a season 13 times (including last winter), and 30 or more
games in a campaign seven times. He began his coaching career at
Lake Superior State in 1966, guiding the Lakers to five NAIA
Tournament appearances and an NAIA national championship
(1971-72) in a span of seven years. Six times the CCHA Coach of the
Year, he was honored with the Spencer Penrose Award as National
Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association in
1991-92.
Michigan Tech head coach Bob Mancini (Colorado College '82) is
in his fourth season with the Huskies, and in his sixth campaign
overall. He is 51-72-17 at MTU, and 87-104-29 overall.
Northern Michigan mentor Rick Comley (Lake Superior, '72), a
former Mason player now in his 20th year with the Wildcats and
22nd season overall, is 414-322-42 at NMU, and 473-368-45 overall.
Michigan bench boss Gordon "Red" Berenson (Michigan '62) is in
his 12th season at the Wolverine helm. The all-time winningest
coach in school history, he boasts a career ledger of 278-168-24.

THE SERIES: MSU is 63-77-2 all-time against Michigan Tech (11-4-0
in Detroit), having garnered a 3-2 OT win back on Dec. 29, 1993 at
the GLI in the teams' last encounter. The Spartans are 7-8-0 all-time
versus Northern Michigan (1-1-0 in Detroit), with the Wildcats having
claimed a 4-1 victory in the teams' last meeting on Dec. 26, 1992 at
the GLI. The Green & White is 94-112-6 all-time with Michigan (5-11-
1 in Detroit), State having claimed a 4-3 victory at Munn Arena on
Nov. 28 this season in the most recent match-up.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The Michigan Tech Huskies (6-10-3,
5-8-3 WCHA/6th) are coming off two losses (3-2, 3-1) at St. Cloud.
The Northern Michigan Wildcats (3-15-1, 1-14-1 WCHA/10th) are
reeling from a pair of losses (4-1, 5-0) to Denver.
The Michigan Wolverines (12-4-0, 9-3-0 CCHA/3rd) will enter the
GLI following an 8-2 win over Lake Superior and a 5-0 loss at
Western Michigan.

WESTERN MICHIGAN RECAP: In the battle for first place, it was
the host Spartans who came out on top, scoring once in each period
and riding Chad Alban's 18 saves to a 3-0 blanking of the visiting

Broncos on Friday, Dec. 8. Steve Ferranti tallied his fifth game-
winning goal of the year at 9:29 of the first period, shoveling in a
Tony Tuzzolino cross-crease pass, and Taylor Clarke made it 2-0
MSU with a non-stop breakaway effort off a Jeff Kozakowski feed at
9:24 of the middle stanza. Sean Berens closed out the scoring with
MSU's first empty-net goal of the campaign at 17:48 of the third
session with WMU netminder Marc Magliarditi (32 saves) off the ice
for an extra attacker. Clarke was named first star of the game, while
Ferranti took second star and Alban earned third star. Junior left
wing Brian Crane was ejected for a third-period fight with WMU's
Jamal Mayers, and was forced to sit out against LSSU via a game
disqualification penalty.

LAKE SUPERIOR RECAP: The Spartans and Lakers battled to a
scoreless tie for just over 52 minutes on Saturday, Dec. 9, until
LSSU's Sean Tallaire scored at the 7:57 mark of the third period.
Bryan Fuss and Brian Felsner added Laker tallies at 13:49 and
19:30, respectively, for the 3-0 final that dropped MSU back into a
first-place tie with WMU atop the CCHA. State outshot LSSU on the
night, 23-19, but Laker netminder Sean Kulick turned aside all
Spartan chances to earn first star of the game honors. The Green &
White, which went 0-for-6 on the power play, saw its CCHA winning
streak end at 10 games, and its home winning streak cease at eight
games. MSU goaltender Chad Alban's shutout streak, begun at
Ohio State on Dec. 2, also ended after 114:35 of play.

EYE ON ANSON: Spartan senior center and team captain Anson
Carter, voted a preseason All-America candidate by The Sporting
News and College Sports, and also labeled a preseason Hobey
Baker Award candidate by the Decathlon Athletic Club of Minnesota,
is the leading returning goal scorer in NCAA Division I with 34 tallies
a year ago, including a nation-high seven shorthanded goals. A
Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist, a Second-Team All-American
at forward, and the only repeat member of the All-CCHA First Team
last year, Carter was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week
for Nov. 28-Dec. 2 after scoring three goals in three Spartan wins,
and is in tenth place on the all-time Spartan goal-scoring scroll, just
one score out of the ninth spot. The leading active scorer among
current Spartans (95-61=156) and the leading scorer on this year's
squad (tied with Mike Watt), Carter is 10th in CCHA overall scoring
this season with 12-9=21 totals through 19 games. He also has
points in 11 of his last 14 games, going 11-6=17 in that span. He is
also in third place on the all-time Spartan ladder with 10
shorthanded goals.

WATT A SCORER: Sophomore left wing Mike Watt, who earned
CCHA All-Rookie Team Honorable Mention a year ago after tallying
12-6=18 totals in 39 games, became the first Spartan this season to
hit double figures in points following his two-goal effort against
Cornell on Nov. 3. Watt is still tied with Anson Carter for the team
scoring lead with 9-12=21 totals in 19 outings. He is 11th in CCHA
overall scoring, and is 12th in league scoring with 5-10=15 totals in
14 games. Watt, who has points in 11 of his last 14 games (7-
10=17), was a second-round choice (32nd overall) of the Edmonton
Oilers in 1994.

FROSH PHENOM: MSU leading freshman scorer Mike York (6-
13=19) is still third on the Spartans in scoring behind linemates
Anson Carter and Mike Watt. He is second among CCHA freshmen
in overall scoring, ranks 18th among all CCHA players, and has
points in six of his last nine games (1-7=8).

THE COMEBACK KID: Junior center Steve Ferranti has returned to
his freshman form of 1993-94 when he was named MSU's "Rookie of
the Year". Following his game-winner on Nov. 28 against Michigan,
and two points in the Ohio State series, Ferranti tallied his fifth
game-winning goal in his last 11 games versus WMU to go along
with an assist. He now has 8-7=15 totals in 16 games, with points in
six of his last eight outings (4-5=9).

WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY: MSU freshmen Mike
York and Chris Bogas have been selected to the 1996 U.S. National
Junior Team training camp for the American squad that will compete
at the World Junior Hockey Championship from Dec. 26, 1995-Jan.
4, 1996 in Boston, Mass. North of the border, MSU sophomore left
wing Mike Watt has been invited to the Canadian Junior National
Team camp. If selected to their respective squads, they will miss the
GLI, plus MSU's series at Alaska Fairbanks from Jan. 4-6.

SPARTANOTES: To date, MSU rookies have contributed 18-37=55
numbers to the Spartan scoring cause over 19 games...Chad Alban
is first among CCHA netminders with 13 wins, is third with 365 saves,
and is first with 1028 minutes played...Sean Berens is tied for the
team assist lead with Chris Bogas. With his empty-net goal versus
WMU, Berens held the only Spartan scoring streak going into the
LSSU game, having gone 2-2=4 in three straight games...MSU has
more overtime goals (2) than any other CCHA school so far...Jeff
Kozakowski scored his first career game-winning goal versus OSU
to go with an assist versus Michigan, and added an assist versus
WMU...Chris Bogas leads all MSU defensemen with 14 assists and
15 points, and leads all Spartans with a +17 plus/minus
rating...Friday's win was MSU's first shutout of WMU since a 4-0
whitewash on Oct. 31, 1987, in Kalamazoo. Saturday's setback was
MSU's first shutout loss since a 1-0 blanking on Feb. 11 by Miami
(Ohio) at Munn Arena....State has three shutouts in its last ten
games, two by Chad Alban and one by Mike Brusseau, all in CCHA
play.

INJURIES: Jon Gaskins, blood clots, out.

UP NEXT: After the GLI, the Spartans return to CCHA action with a
three-game slate at Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 4-6. For ticket
