Summary:
This was a completely different team than was seen against Western
Michigan Tuesday evening. UIC definitely played up to the level of
competition tonight. After the game, Michigan head coach, Red Berenson,
said that "UIC played like the #1 team and Michigan like the #7 team."
Well, Red was exaggerating a little bit, but UIC sure did play even with
Michigan the entire game. However, UIC did outplay UM in the second
period. UIC goalie, Paul Spencer, played very well tonight. Even when
the defense let him down, he came up with some great saves on breakaways.
UIC is still having problems on defense. At least three of Michigan's
goals scored because UIC forgot about the trailer. They would stop the
first guy down and maybe even block the shot, but then the next UM player
would get the puck and shoot.
Also still a problem for UIC is their passing, although it was better
than on Tuesday. Passing is too slow during power plays, and players just
don't seem to want to shoot the puck.
On the plus side, Jeff Blum had a great game, as did Rob Hutson. Deuce
Wynes scored his first goal of the season.

Several leftover questions and comments from Tuesday's game: What is
record for number of empty net goals scored by one team in a game? What
is the record for the total number of minutes played empty-handed in a
season for one team? (UIC is now at 32 minutes)
If anyone still has questions about the game, I'll try to answer them.
However, it was about as difficult to watch the game as it was to drive
through the snowstorm to and from the game. Are we still talking about
referees? Because Jeff Shell was his usual brutal self. The 5 minute
major called against UIC Rob Hutson was rather severe, especially when you
consider that during the third period, UIC's Rob Mottau was slashed bad
enough for him to fall to the ice and get up limping, but the WMU player
was only given 2 minutes (Rob got a 10 minute misconduct on this play for
hitting his stick on the glass when he heard that Shell only called a 2
minute slash).
