On "The Heal Point System" ...

The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.

On the calculation ...

"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.

"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.

Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and
HOCKEY-L, The College Hockey Discussion List, an internet mailing list
hosted by The University of Maine System. Mr. Machnik's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available in the HOCKEY-L
([log in to unmask]) archives as file "9495COMP SCHEDULE".

Notes for this issue:

1. The "season" of teams will be extended by any playoff games played.

2. The average rank of teams by league is as follows:

   WCHA 14.80
    HEA 20.11
   CCHA 23.45
   ECAC 26.58
    IND 42.00

3. ECAC teams generally fair poorly this week as several of them did
   not play.

4. Ferris State fares well in this week's HEAL (14th) compared to RPICH
   (30th) and CHODR (26th).

5. Mass Lowell fares well in this week's HEAL (17th) and CHODR (17th)
   compared to RPICH (28th).

6. Brown fares poorly in this week's HEAL (22nd) compared to RPICH
   (11th) and CHODR (13th).

7. North Dakota fares well in this week's HEAL (12th) and RPICH (17th)
compared to CHODR (27). CHODR also ranks Michigan Tech and RPI
poorly (28th and 29th) compared to HEAL (15th and 16th) and CHODR
(15th and 18th). CHODR also seems to especially like St. Cloud
(15th), Western Michigan (16th), Colgate (18th), and Lake Superior
   (14th).

8. The biggest gainer of the week was Ferris State (22nd to 14th). FSU
beat "middle of the pack" Western Michigan twice, but the wins were
especially important as Western has several wins against "second
division" teams; this will be adjusted as Western completes the
relatively tough part of its schedule.

9. As with league standings (based on won/lost record), teams with
"games in hand" have an advantage with HEAL, as their HEAL TI will
almost always significantly increase as they win or tie games
while other teams remain idle. Most teams have 10 to 12 games
remaining on their regular season schedule.
