Wisconsin powers its way past CC

MADISON, Wis. - Colorado College's hockey team accomplished two things this
weekend:
  A. The Tigers got a split.
  B. The Tigers woke up the Wisconsin Badgers' power play.

One night after ending a 12-game Dane County Coliseum dry spell with a 5-2
victory, CC was drilled 8-1 by Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Badgers (12-10-1 overall, 10-8-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey
Association) entered the game ranked last in the league in power-play
proficiency, having scored just 22 times in 150 man-advantage chances.

But Saturday, before 8,500 fans and a national TV audience, Wisconsin was 5 for
11 in power-play situations. The Badgers even scored a short-handed goal.
Wisconsin goalie Kirk Daubenspeck (31 saves) appeared to be headed for his first
career shutout until Jason Gudmundson scored with a minute left.

In the second period, CC's Colin Schmidt was whistled for a five-minute major
penalty, two two-minute penalties and a 10-minute misconduct. He sat out the
rest of the game. Tiger captain Kent Fearns earned a five-minute major and
was benched.

"I've never been so disappointed in a hockey team, not so much for the score
but for the dumb penalties we took in the second period," said CC coach Don
Lucia, whose team is 18-6 overall and 13-5 and first in the WCHA. "We win with
class and we lost with class, and I told the team that if anybody else pulls
the stuff Schmidt and Fearns did, they'll sit, too.

"Tonight, Wisconsin outplayed, out-hit, and out-fought us. It was men against
boys."

CC goalie Judd Lambert allowed six goals and was replaced for much of the
second period.
