The DIGESTS option of a HOCKEY-L subscription and HOCKEY-D subscriptions
(really two ways of getting the same thing) has been changed so that the
daily digests will be limited to about 1,500 lines. This means the
folks with mail software limiting incoming mail to 100,000 bytes should
now be able to read digests effectively.
A side-effect of this change is that on active days once the 1,500 line
limit has been accumulated, the digest will be distributed then, as is,
to all HOCKEY-D and HOCKEY-L/DIGESTS. If this early distribution is
made, articles posted later in the day will appear in the normal
overnight digest.

P.S. If you have an INDEX subscription, I don't (yet) know the effect.
I suspect you may get more than one INDEX mail per day.
P.P.S. If you're wondering what all this is about, I'll try to explain:
The College Hockey Discussion List, aka HOCKEY-L, is distributed in a
number of ways.
- HOCKEY-L subscription (default or MAIL option)
This is a normal, default subscription. Such folks get a
separate mail file for each article posted to HOCKEY-L. There
are about 400 such subscribers.
- HOCKEY-L subscription (INDEX option)
This subscription option (send mail to [log in to unmask]
and in the body enter SET HOCKEY-L INDEX) results in a daily
mail file containing a few lines about each article posted on
the previous day and directions on how to easily obtain the
contents of some or all of those postings. An INDEX
subscription is good for times you will be away from your
mail-box for a few or several days, yet wish an easy way to
catch up with HOCKEY-L events. An INDEX subscription may also
be a good means for those that have a very specialized
interest, so that they can request just the postings of
interest to them (according to items such as the poster name
and address and subject line). There are about 10 such
subscribers.
- HOCKEY-L subscription (DIGESTS option)
This subscription option (send mail to [log in to unmask]
and in the body enter SET HOCKEY-L DIGESTS) results in a daily
mail file containing a table of contents followed by the entire
contents of each article posted that day. A DIGESTS
subscription is good for those that want to read or skim all
HOCKEY-L articles, but don't want the clutter of individual
mail files nor the time spent dealing with those (many)
individual files. There are about 150 such subscriptions.
- HOCKEY-D subscription (same as DIGESTS option above)
A subscription to the HOCKEY-D list is identical to a HOCKEY-L
subscription with the DIGESTS option. HOCKEY-D exists only
because INDEX/DIGESTS are relatively new LISTSERV distribution
options. There are about 100 such subscriptions.
- one of many authorized local re-distributions
There are a dozen or so "local distributions" of HOCKEY-L.
These run the gamut from a re-mailing to a half dozen folks to
Usenet and NETNEWS local groups that have large audiences.
Though statistics are not available, I estimate 1,000-3,000
folks read HOCKEY-L via such redistributions.
- Note: HOCKEY-L is *not* available via a "global" Usenet/NETNEWS
group, nor will it be distributed that way. HOCKEY-L is not a
"public domain" information service. Any redistribution of
HOCKEY-L must be authorized by the administrator. Any posting
to HOCKEY-L should be considered as being material belonging to
the author and treated as such.
Did anyone really read this far?! :-)
As always, if you have comments of an administrative nature, please make
them privately to the administrator ([log in to unmask]) and not to
HOCKEY-L. Thanks.
