And the latest on Maine ...

BANGOR, Maine (AP) -- The University of Maine said
Monday it would go to court to get its defending national
championship hockey team into the Hockey East tournament
this week.
Hockey East voted last week to bar the Black Bears from
the postseason tournament because a Maine player, Patrice
Tardif, was found to have been academically ineligible
for much of the 1993-1994 season.
Tardif was one of five graduate student-athletes who
were misinformed about the number of credits they needed
in order to play. That led to the suspension of the school's
athletic director and compliance officer.
Maine officials planned to ask Penobscot County Superior
Court Justice Robert Browne for a temporary restraining order
and an injunction that would allow the team to play in the
Hockey East tournament.
"We feel strongly that students should not be punished
for events over which they had no control," said university
president Frederick Hutchinson.
"The NCAA says the team is eligible to compete, and we
believe Hockey East should acknowledge that and treat the
university's students the same way it treats students
from other universities."
Hockey East's vote to bar Maine from the tournament
prompted the league's assistant commissioner, Nonni Daly,
to resign.
"All of my ethical, moral and philosophical principles
were violated by the actions the board took" Daly said.
"When you feel that way, you can't be effective in
the position you hold.
You've got 30 kids who didn't do anything wrong and they
were penalized heavily for something they didn't do."
