Harvard beat Union, 3-2, Friday night in Schenectady. Union took a
1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal by Jason Kean in the second period.
Kris Goodjohn and Kean got in just behind the defense. Goodjohn held
on long enough to force the defense to concentrate on him, then slid
the puck to Kean for one of Union's nicest goals this season. Harvard
scored the next three, the first two by (I think) Brent Nowak. The
tying goal came after a messy rush up ice, with Harvard and Union
players falling over each other. The second goal was a
nicely-converted 3-on-2 turned 3-on-3. The killer for Union came in
the third, when a Harvard player sent a pass toward the crease, and it
deflected off Brandon Snee's skate and into the net. Union got within
one just 4 seconds into a power play when Jeff Wilson took a pass
right out in front and beat Will Crothers. Union had more chances to
tie, but could not do so. The Union fans (and Union coach Kevin
Sneddon) were upset by a few non-calls by Jeff Fulton, especially one
where Wilson was taken out on what looked like a sure penalty. After
a Harvard player hit the post on an empty-net bid, and a Union
timeout, Harvard played keepaway and pinned Union in their defensive
zone, forcing Snee to stay in the net.

I thought Union played a nice game, and a similar effort will earn a
point or two most nights. The penalty kill looked great, but the
power play was not (other than the Wilson goal, right off a faceoff).

Brandon Snee passed Trevor Koenig for the all-time Union saves lead
during the first period.

Union falls to 1-4-1 in the ECAC, 5-6-3 overall. Brown visits
Achilles on Saturday, while Harvard will play RPI.
