congratulations to the tigers of colorado college on a
great season and a great game. i look forward to their
return in 1997.
and congratulations to the michigan wolverines on a
great season and a well-deserved national title. i've
been waiting for this one for a long time, and it was
sweet.
my comments on the game:
it seemed like both teams came out flat and/or
tentative in the first period. it may be my homerism,
but i felt like michigan simply was not playing their
game. i felt fortunate to go into the locker room with
a one-goal lead.
cc dominated the second period. their power play
looked ferocious, as did their even strength play.
michigan took some dumb penalties, but survived. if cc
had scored another in the second, the tigers may very
well have taken the title, but the wolverines were able
to hold them off.
i felt confident that michigan would come out stronger
in the third, and they did. somehow, they still seemed
tentative, but they were sustaining offensive pressure
at times, and they were able to tie it up, and send it
to ot.
the overtime period was michigan's. i couldn't believe
all the room in front of the cc net as brendan morrison
put away the game-winner, but i'm not complaining. it
kinda reminds me of big wolverine losses in years past.
overall, i thought cc played a great game. i felt like
they did a great job of taking michigan off their game
and giving themselves a great chance to win it. i look
forward to seeing the tigers again next season...
i'm happy to finally be able to say michigan wolverines
and national champions in the same breath, as we've
been so close for so many years. i'm happy for red
berenson, as i think he's a great coach, and i love
watching his teams play. it was nice to see brendan
morrison dedicate the victory to all the great
wolverine teams that didn't quite make it.
as for espn's coverage, i thought it was lacking. i
was disappointed that they didn't to interviews and
features relevant to college hockey during the
intermissions. a replay of mike legg's goal would have
been great (i still haven't seen it). maybe a story on
michigan's and cc's seasons up to this point. i dunno.
but i guess it's a step in the right direction to at
least have live coverage of college hockey.
i did like the fact that they had brian bonin as a
guest during the second(?) period. it was especially
interesting because he has played against both teams
and was able to offer some insight on each.
