It has been my experience as a college hockey coach that a referee will
call for roughing when a player takes a punch with his glove on and no
furhter punching is made. The fighting calls have typically been made
when a bare handed punch is thrown or when a battle ensues with the
gloves on that the referees can't break up. Such cheap shots with the
gloves on don't constitute a fighting penalty IMHO. Just throwing in my
2 cents worth.
