It is interesting to note that in the six-year history of this format
(from 1990 through 1995), only Clarkson and Harvard have never made an
appearance in the preliminary round game by virtue of always finishing in
the top six. Princeton has appeared every year (six times) followed by
Colgate (four times) and Vermont (three times). Union is making its
first appearance. In 1994, the first time Union made the Division I
playoffs, it finished in 6th place, and therefore out of the preliminary
round.

The preliminary round is a great opportunity for teams on the verge of
moving into the top echelon to host a playoff game. It generated a lot
of enthusiasm at Brown in 1991 and particularly in 1990, when Brown's
goaltender was the great Chris Harvey, and the fabulous class of
1993 (Derek Chauvette, Scott Hanley, Mike Ross, Jamie O'Brien, Tim
Chase, Joe Beck, etc.) were first-year students. After Brown defeated
Vermont in 1990, a couple hundred students jumped over the glass to
celebrate with the team. This kind of spirit hasn't been seen at Meehan
in years.
