It was a wild and crazy game, but two plays, both involving BG D Todd
Reirden and a man-advantage, almost turned the tide for Kent.

The first incident was in the second. BG had a 3-on-1 break while
shorthanded. Todd was leading the triangle but a winger behind him was
carrying the puck. The trailer got the pass and Todd cut in front of
the goalie. The trailer for BG cut across, too, and put the puck in the
net. But the ref said "no goal" and called a penalty on Todd for
interference. Replays showed no sign of interference, of course. This
led to Kent's 5-on-3 power play goal and later they would tie it at 4.

The second incident came in the third. This time BG was a man up. Todd
took a shot from the left point, which was blocked by Jim Mitchell. The
puck was rolling toward the BG end, with only Todd heading back for BG
and Mitchell a few strides behind him. At the BG blue line, Mitchell
jumps on Todd's back, knocking him down. Mitchell lands on his feet,
scoops up the loose biscuit, and scores on his breakaway.

But BG's high-octane offense was going strong and able to overcome both
incidents. The Falcons hit the century mark in shots attempted (102)
and put 59 on goal. BG's defense did not allow a lot of quality scoring
chances, but what they did give up were of very high quality (like
breakaways) and Kent took advantage of every single one.

Kevin Lune was again a terror on the ice. Reirden managed 5 points and
Brian Holzinger kept KSU at a distance with two third-period goals.
Curtis Fry continued his campaign to be on the all-rookie team with a
pair of goals. Mark Kotary had 2 goals and an assist for Kent. Poor
Scott Shaw made 50 saves but still didn't manage selection as a star of
the game.
