Well the US lost and Canada won in the quarterfinals. Not much else
to say except thanks to Staffan A. for the excellent writeups and the
rosters.

Ulf Dahlen had 2 goals and 2 assists, and Michael "Magic" Nylander's
excellent passes set up 4 goals, as two-time reigning world champions
Sweden beat USA 5-2.
Sweden got a terrific start as Renberg scored after only 37 seconds.
Thomas Rundqvist and Kenneth Kennholt broke up an American counter attack
at the blue line and sent the puck to Renberg, Renberg and Mikael Andersson
came in alone with Richter, Renberg to Andersson, back to Renberg and
Richter had no chance, 1-0. Shortly after, USA had a similar opportunity
as Sweden's 1-0 goal, Modano was involved but Tommy Soderstrom came up big.
USA equalized with 4 secs left in a power play. Bob Beers took a slap shot
from the blue line, there was lots of traffic in front of Soderstrom, and
the puck actually deflected on Podein's hip and into the goal, 1-1.
Modano had another good opportunity after that but Tommy played well.
Sweden took the lead again as Nylander entered the USA zone, slammed on
the breaks, and passed to Forsberg. Forsberg faked a slap shot and made
a wrist shot that went in by Richter's far post, 2-1. Then, USA got a goal
disallowed. Johnson came in alone with Soderstrom, was checked from behind
and lost control of the puck, Tommy made the save, Johnson crashed into
Tommy and then into the goal, the goal was moved, and after came the puck
and made it over the goal line. The goal was disallowed but the question
is if that goal was correct after all. Anyway, USA had most of the
pressure in the first period, they skated better and created more chances,
but Tommy played well in goal.
The Swedes played slightly better in the 2nd period but again USA created
more opportunities. Turcotte and Modano came in 2-on-1, Turcotte
looked for a pass to Modano, but snapped a hard, low wrist shot by Tommy's
far post and the score was tied again, 2-2. The game was close at this
point and it was nerve-wracking, I'll tell ya.
The Swedes got a good start in the third period. Nylander made a great pass
in power play back to Peter Andersson, who passed along to Challe, Challe
passed along to Dahlen who was parked straight in front of the goal, and
Dahlen made no mistake as he from close range put the puck between Richter's
pads. The Swedes increased the lead to 4-2 on a 4-on-2 break away, Nylander
entered the offensive zone, dropped the puck back to Dahlen who made a cross-
ice pass to Akerstrom, and Akerstrom one-timed the puck past Richter. Another
power play goal made it 5-2. Nylander again to Peter Andersson to Charles
Berglund in front, Challe took a shot that Richter saved but Dahlen was there
to poke in the rebound. The Swedes clearly dominated the third period, as
it seemed as USA ran out of fuel, they lost the fast skating game they had
had in the first two periods. Only Tony Amonte had a couple of scoring
opportunities in the third period.
The factor that eventually made a difference in this game was probably
the defense. The US defensemen were too slow, and the Swedes could use
this in their favor. The US team made a great game, though, forechecked
hard and played offensive hockey.
Sad to see, Eric Weinrich lost his temper in the final seconds of the game
as he cheap-shotted Whaler team-mate Michael Nylander on his injured
jaw. Michael will have a X-ray, then we'll see if he can play more in this
tourney.
Player of the game was.. for Sweden Ulf Dahlen, and for the US Mike Richter.
Since USA was eliminated from the tourney, three MVP's were selected:
Adam Burt, Darren Turcotte and Rob Gaudreau.

Finland 7 7 14 - 28 7*2min Russia
Canada got an early goal, Mark Recchi skated in and the Finnish defenseman
backed in too close to Ketterer. Recchi blasted a wrist shot by Ketterer's
far post, and the puck slightly touched Haapakoski's stick before entering
the goal, 1-0. Not more happened in the first period, as both teams played
kind of sloppy hockey. Yeah, one thing worth mentioning was Markus Ketterer's
excellent glove save on Mike Gartner's hard slap shot from close range.
Janne Laukkanen equalized the score to 1-1 as he entered the Canadian zone,
faked a slap shot, waited, then shot a slap shot that surprised Ranford, and
the puck went in in the top corner. Shortly after, the Finns took a 'too many
men on the ice' penalty, as they for around 30 secs played with 6 players.
Canada capitalized on the power play, Dave Manson's slap shot from the blue
line made it 2-1, with lots of traffic in front of Ketterer.
Jari Korpisalo had a good chance of leveling the score early in the third
period, but then it was time for Mark Recchi again. A similar goal as the
1-0 goal, wrist shot by Ketterer's far post made it 3-1. Then Dave Gagner
scored a pp goal as he was left totally alone in front of Ketterer. Mark
Recchi made a nice behind-the-back pass to Gagner and the score was 4-1.
(The box score lists Buchberger as having the assists, but that's wrong).
The Finns pulled the goalie but Manson could backhand the puck from his
own goal line all the way down to the Finnish goal (yes, somewhat flukey).
So, the Finns couldn't repeat last year's success of making the final.
"We just weren't good enough this year" coach Matikainen said. Finland
hasn't had any luck with the NHL pros either. Tikkanen didn't score a
point in 6 games, and Christian Ruuttu couldn't join at all as he was
bothered by a back injury.
Also, I don't know if Matikainen's juggling around with the lines in this game
was such a success. They took two unnecessary 'too men on the ice' penalties
in the second period, a result of the line changes? The Finnish line that
managed to pressure Canada the most was the one with Koivu-Tikkanen-Korpisalo.
I don't know who got the player of the game awards, but I think Saku Koivu
was the absolute best player in the Finnish team, and in Canada Dave Manson
made a great job. Saku Koivu is a wonder-kid, fully comparable with Paul
Kariya in the Canadian team, as both are smallish players with a great
eye for the game (excellent passers).
