I just got back from a holiday trip, and haven't seen a respones to the
question of why Clarkson refused a NC$$ bid at the end of their undefeated
season in 1955-56.  The explanation I heard while attending Clrkson is that
several players on the team would have been ineligible to compete in the
tournament. (I'm not sure why.)  The playeres then voted that they would
prefer not to play if all of their teammates would not be allowed to compete.
 
Can anyone confirm this explanation?
