The WCHA takes a swing to the west this weekend, as North Dakota, St.
Cloud, Denver and Colorado College each host a weekend series. Justin
Doherty, UND Sports Information Director, will be in Grand Forks to
welcome his old employers, Northern Michigan. Last season, CC beat
Minnesota-Duluth 5 times. Two of those wins came in the best-of-3 WCHA
first round of the play-offs. All 3 games went into overtime, by the
way. Co-leader Wisconsin travels to 3rd-place Denver for a contest
between two teams that have hit the skids over their last 4 games: DU
is 0-3-1 and UW is 1-3. And talk about 2 teams going in opposite
directions: Tech is 0-5-1 in its last 6 while SCSU is 5-1.
Over in the CCHA, Notre Dame's re-acquaintance with its old league
members is continuing. This weekend UND plays Ohio State and Bowling
Green, the first time the Irish have played either one of these teams
since they left the CCHA in 1983. Illinois-Chicago is UND's traveling
buddy. Their game at OSU marks the completion of the season series
between the Flames and the Buckeyes. In late January, the Flames will
return on a Michigan/BG swing to finish their season against the
Falcons.
Michigan State has another tough opponent, as it hosts Lake Superior
for a pair. MSU's next league game (in January) will also be against
LSSU. The Lakers have a series at Miami before they face the Spartans
again, however. Kent faces Michigan twice, only the 2nd and 3rd times
these teams have ever played.
There is limited action in Hockey East this weekend, with only 1 league
game per night. New Hampshire and Maine do meet in a non-conference
tilt at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine tonight,
however. UMass-Lowell will be the only team to make significant moves
in the league standings this weekend, as it plays at Northeastern and
then hosts Maine.
The ECAC it taking is easy this weekend, too, as there is only 1
"normal" league series: Clarkson and St. Lawrence travel to Princeton
and Yale. The North Country Duo hopes to do better than last week, when
they each went 1-1 on their road trip. The game for Capital District
bragging rights will take place in Troy tonight. The re-match in
Schenectady won't be until late January.
Vermont plays at Harvard in a 2 pm Sunday afternoon affair.
