HOCKEY WINS AT FRAMINGHAM STATE, 6-2
FRAMINGHAM, MA –The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored four goals in the first period and went on to defeat host Framingham State, 6-2, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Loring Ice Arena Saturday evening.
Senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 1-0 when he scored a goal on the game’s first shift, but Dan Miressi tied it for the Rams on a penalty shot at the 6:00 mark.
The Corsairs broke the tie, getting goals from junior forward Greg Girtatos (Tyngsboro, MA/Bishop Guertin HS), sophomore Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA/Eastern Kodiaks-IJHL) and junior forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL), making it 4-1 after the first period and chasing Framingham starting goaltender Nick Cafrelli. Girtatos’ goal was his first in a Corsair uniform.
UMass Dartmouth then got a goal in each of the next two periods, with freshmen forwards Jason Effertz (Oceanside, CA/Billings Bulls-NORPAC) and Steve Laliberte (East Falmouth, MA/Bridgton Academy) each scoring the first goals of their UMD careers. Effertz’ line mates, freshman forward Mike Peacock (Centerville, MA/Bridgton Academy) and senior forward James Neal (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) assisted on his goal. Framingham scored their second goal of the game in the second period.
The Rams outshot the Corsairs, 29-23. Junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 27 stops for UMD, while Cafrelli and Dale Adams combined for 18 saves for the Rams. UMD was issued nine penalties for 18 minutes, FSU four for eight minutes.
“We scored early, and then they came back on a penalty shot,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “Ryan Williams actually made the save on the penalty shot, but the puck went in off him. After they scored, we had to kill off a two minute penalty, and then we came back and scored three goals. Greg Girtatos got his first goal for us, and our third and fourth lines came through. Overall, it was a pretty sloppy game, but we kept pace with Salem State and Plymouth State.”
UMass Dartmouth improved to 12-5-1 and 8-3-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while Framingham State dropped to 3-11-3 and 2-8-2 with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they visit Stonehill next Tuesday evening. Framingham State will host Fitchburg State next Thursday.
