HOCKEY FALLS TO SALEM STATE, 7-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team lost to visiting Salem State, 7-1, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday evening.

Salem State scored on five of their first nine shots en route to the victory.

The Vikings stormed out to a 3-0 lead over the Corsairs after the first period. Vikings senior forward Michael Genovese (Hingham, MA/South Shore Kings) put Salem State on the board taking a nice feed from sophomore Nick Lampson (Groton, MA/Jersey Hitmen) at 4:40. Their second goal occurred just four seconds into their second power play opportunity. Sophomore forward Casey Terreri (Warwick, RI/South Shore Kings) deflected a shot from the point off sophomore defenseman Dan Smolinsky (Plymouth, MA/South Shore Kings) making it 2-0 at 11:41. Vikings junior forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/UMass Dartmouth) also assisted on the play. Senior forward Alexander Molnar (Nitra, Slovakia/Helena Big Horns) increased the lead to 3-0 as he took a pass from sophomore forward Chris Costigan (Salem, NH/Mass Cyclones) and one-timed it past Corsair senior goalie Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) at 17:44. Freshman forward Nick Riccio (Wilmington, MA/South Kent) notched an assist on the goal.

Salem State picked up where they left off to start the second period scoring at 1:47 to push the lead to 4-0 over the Corsairs. Terreri scored over the left shoulder of Tracy off a nice pass from Capodanno. Junior forward Ian Flanagan (New Hampton, NH/Boston Bulldogs) added an assist. The Vikings would add yet another tally when Capodanno found the back of the net assisted by senior defenseman Samuel Cannata (Bozeman, MT/Brooks Bandits) at 5:41. Corsair freshman goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Golden Rockets) would replace Tracy between the pipes at this point. Tracy finished the game with four saves on nine shots.

The Vikings would tack on another goal at 8:40 of the third period when Flanagan snuck one past Vandervies assisted by Capodanno and Terreri. The Corsairs ended the shutout bid, scoring on a four on three power play when senior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) blasted a goal from the wing on a pass by senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr Bandits) at 12:10. Salem State capped the night with their seventh goal with just over a minute to play in the contest as sophomore forward Josh Franklin (Wrentham, MA/University of Vermont) slid a backhand past Vandervies assisted by Terreri.

"Clearly they scored when the opportunities presented themselves," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "They were quick goal scorers’ goals. A couple were bang-bang plays and one was a seeing eye shot from the point. They have very skilled high-end offensive players and LaCour was good in goal. After every win and loss, you put it behind you and go on from there. There is still a lot of hockey to be played.”

The Corsairs outshot the Vikings 24-13 in the first two periods, but Salem State took a 16-5 advantage in the third and both teams finished with 29 shots on goal. Vikings senior James LaCour (Silver Spring, MD/Walpole Stars) made 28 stops for Salem State. Vandervies had 18 for UMD.

UMD fell to 13-6-1 and 8-4-1 in the MASCAC with the defeat, while SSU improved to 13-4-2 and 8-3-2 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Westfield State Thursday evening. The Vikings will visit Plymouth State Thursday.
