       HOCKEY DOWNS FRAMINGHAM STATE, 5-2

NEW BEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team outscored visiting Framingham State in the third period, 3-1, and defeated the Rams, 5-2, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

Senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) took a pass from senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits), who won a face-off in the offensive zone, and scored at 2:02 of the third period to make it 3-1. Sophomore forward Ben Pacific (Marlborough, MA/Tyngsboro Huskies) batted home a rebound with the Rams on the power play at 3:26 to make it 3-2, but senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Mustangs) converted a pass from sophomore forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Lebanon Valley) to make it 4-2 at 6:53.

Senior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored an empty net goal with 30 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.

UMass Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, scoring a pair of power play goals 1:58 apart. Freshman defenseman Ryan Hurd (Mound, MN/Rochester Ice Hawks) scored on a slap shot from the point at 13:18. Senior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) and sophomore forward Bill Colclough (Naples, FL/Peoria Mustangs) assisted. Hurd then set up junior forward Mike Owens’ (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) goal at 15:16, dropping a pass to Owens, who fired home a wrist shot. Horgan drew the other assist.

Framingham State had taken an early 1-0 lead when freshman forward Ken Tanaka (Wayland, MA/South Shore Kings) picked up a loose puck and scored unassisted at 4:35 of the first period.

"It was a satisfying win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We were up, 2-1, going into the third period, and the best way to defend a lead is to add to it, which we did, outscoring them, 3-1. Some of our goal scorers are starting to step up. Todd Bartelson scored for us off an end zone face off, and Joe Hill scored a big goal to restore our two-goal lead. Framingham played a good game; they hung in there and kept fighting."

The Corsairs out shot FSU, 36-22. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/ Medford HS) made 20 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while freshman Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA/Minnesota Owls) made 31 stops for Framingham State. Each team drew nine penalties. UMass Dartmouth converted two power play opportunities, while the Rams scored one power play goal.

UMD improved to 12-5-1 and 7-3-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while FSU fell to 2-12-1 and 2-9-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Fitchburg State next Thursday evening. The Rams will visit Stonehill next Wednesday.
