       HOCKEY DEFEATS SALVE REGINA, 5-2
NEW BEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored three times in the first period, then held off visiting Salve Regina and defeated the Seahawks, 5-2, in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Center Saturday.
Junior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) staked the Corsairs to an early 2-0 lead, scoring unassisted at 2:45, and then converting passes from .senior defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) and Shawn Manning (Stoughton, MA/Salisbury School) to make it 2-0 at 6:13. Senior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) made it 3-0 when he finished off a pretty three-way passing play with the Corsairs enjoying a two-man advantage at 10:46. Mickey Dudley and senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) drew the assists.
The Seahawks got on the board when freshman forward Graig Angarella (Chepachet, RI/Hoosac School) converted a pass from sophomore forward Isaiah Carlson (Kenny Lake, AK/Kenny Lake HS) at 2:04 of the second period, then cut the UMD lead to 3-2 when freshman forward David Mantenuto (Waltham, MA/Trinity Pawling HS) re-directed home a pass from freshman forward David Watkins (Natick, MA/Natick HS) at 3:49 of the third period, But the Corsairs regained a two-goal lead when senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) beat SRU freshman goaltender Jean-Christophe Turgeon (Sherbrooke, QC/Windsor HS) with a slap shot from the slot at 15:05 of the third period, then put the game away when sophomore forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Lebanon Valley College) scored into an empty net at 17:51.
“Clearly, we were a little rusty, since we hadn’t played in a month,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “In the second period, we helped Salve get back into the game by over passing in the neutral zone, but, when it got to 3-2, they didn’t have a lot of chances. They only had 10 shots on goal in the final 40 minutes. We need to improve on some things, but it was nice to come back from break and start off with a win.”
UMass Dartmouth out shot Salve Regina, 31-23. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 21 saves for UMD, while Turgeon made 25 stops in relief of freshman Mike McDonald (Whitby, ON/Lake Forest HS), who was replaced after allowing the first two goals and making one save. The Corsairs scored on one of eight power play chances, while blanking the Seahawks on seven opportunities.
UMD improved to 8-2-1 with the victory, while SRU fell to 1-10-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salem State Thursday evening. The Seahawks will host Becker next Sunday.
